Private Industry Roundtable
Learn more about strategies to foster public-private collaboration and advance contraceptive access!
This report describes CECA’s recent Private Industry Roundtable effort and identifies key takeaways, intended to raise awareness of private sector engagement and identify ways to improve cross-sector collaboration.
As part of the development of a Post-Roe Contraceptive Access Strategy, CECA engaged private sector entities to understand their growing role and investment in advancing contraceptive access and Sexual and Reproductive Health Equity (SRHE) more broadly. The purpose of the Private Industry Roundtable was to:
Lay the groundwork to improve collaboration in sexual and reproductive health (SRH), including fostering shared understanding of current issues and needs in contraceptive access and forming new partnerships and community among colleagues.
Develop a shared understanding of private sector priorities, ways of working, and timely updates on work happening to expand contraceptive access to inform future plans for collaboration.
Expand understanding and adoption of CECA’s SRHE framework and priorities within the post-Roe contraceptive access strategy among new partners to support new models of working.
Share outputs for the broader field to raise awareness of private sector engagement in contraceptive access and the opportunities that exist to expand engagement.
Background
Approach
-
To gather feedback on the solutions organizations are employing or considering to preserve and expand access to contraception, with a particular focus on SHRE. Participants included advocates, healthcare providers, pharmaceutical developers, pharmacy chains and insurers, professional societies, and reproductive justice leaders.
-
To explore how the private sector: 1) aims to expand contraceptive access; and 2) has shifted these efforts in a post-Roe environment. The scan combines themes from stakeholder consultations and a review of written materials, including US-focused peer-reviewed literature, news articles, blogs, press releases, organizational websites, and other relevant resources, published between 2010 and 2024.
-
To understand the work happening among advocates and others to protect and expand contraceptive access, identify barriers and challenges faced within the private sector, and identify a shared vision and potential opportunities. Participants from private sector organizations included product developers and manufacturers, pharmacy chains and payers, healthcare delivery platforms, and private equity firms.
-
To provide a high-level overview of communications and messaging in contraceptive access. Private sector partners can use this guide to communicate effectively about contraception to both internal and external audiences.
-
To summarize the project rationale and approach and share the common values and collaborative thinking about what should be prioritized within the private sector. Stakeholders from the broader SRH field can use this report to support the private sector’s efforts to expand contraceptive access and improve SRHE.
The private sector partners involved in this effort developed the following shared vision for contraceptive access to help align values and goals. Grounded in the principles of SRHE, this vision applies to work conducted internally within the private sector, and externally in partnership with others engaged in expanding contraceptive access.
Shared Vision for Contraceptive Access
Our vision is that all people can access comprehensive contraceptive information, products, methods, and/or services that work best for them—when, how, and where they want it, free of barriers and bias. People who do not want contraception, or who want to discontinue contraception, should be free to make and realize that decision for any reason, without pressure, judgment, or coercion.
Key Takeaways
These findings are intended to raise awareness of private sector interest in contraceptive access, foster improved collaboration, identify opportunities to expand engagement, and expand SRHE.
-
All pathways to contraceptive access should be honored and advanced, with an SRHE lens
-
Many of the same issues that public sector partners are engaged in are also of interest to the private sector
-
Successful partnerships should account for, and grow from, the tensions that exist between the public and private sectors and build on respective strengths
